Vale – REV DR LES BROCKWAY

We are saddened by the passing of Rev Dr Les Brockway who went to glory on Saturday 17th February 2018. Our Synod extends deepest sympathies to his wife Teret and his family.

Rev Brockway began his ministry in Queensland where he was ordained in 1970 with the Presbyterian Church. Les and Margaret then moved to the Northern Synod where he served for seven years as the Secretary of the Board of Education for Ministry. After that Les became the Principal of Nungalinya College and then became the Parish Educator with the Northern Regional Council of Congress (NRCC) and the Congress National Dean of Students. Les also served as the Moderator of the Northern Synod from 1983 to 1985.

A minute of appreciation for Les from NRCC when he departed for WA recorded that:

During his 17 years of ministry in the Northern Synod, Les was part of the much ground-breaking work of the Synod to recognise the Indigenous Church. As Moderator he initiated the handing over to the emerging Indigenous Church the right to control ministry and the resources to do this.

At Nungalinya College he sought to forge links with National Institutions, whilst at the same time giving opportunities for Indigenous students to express their theological understandings from their own cultural perspectives.

Les’s doctoral thesis was about agape love and Les lived this out through the love he showed to the people he served during these years.

Les and Margaret then moved to WA and his final placement was at the Mount Pleasant Congregation with the Uniting Church. Les retired in 2005 and he continued in providing ministry support to various congregations.

The funeral for Les will be held at the Mount Pleasant Uniting Church in Perth at 1pm Monday 26th February.

To God be the Glory.
