Shale Seam Gas Exploration

At the Northern Synod Annual Meeting held in June 2013 the following policy was endorsed:

The Northern Synod supports the Northern Territory Environment Centre’s (http://ecnt.org.au/dont-frack-the-territory) call for the Northern Territory to maintain healthy aquifers and refuse permission for the development of shale seam gas extraction that uses the fracking process.

Rationale:  The Economy of Life UCA document adopted by the Northern Synod in 2010 called on the church to advocate for policy that protects fragile eco-systems. The process of coal seam gas extraction involves the pollution and destruction of fragile water aquifers. In both the Top End and in the arid centre, vital water aquifers need protection, to ensure adequate water resources for the present, and for the well-being of future generations.
