Cyclone Lam Disaster Response

February 23, 2015

Initial reports from Uniting Church people in the Arnhem Land communities in the path of Cyclone Lam are that no one has been seriously injured and homes and church properties have not suffered major damage. However, other members of the communities have lost homes and possessions. As the major Christian presence in these communities, the Uniting Church will be involved in the long term response to the disaster which may involve practical as well as pastoral support. An initial assessment of needs is planned for this week with a visit of the Presbytery Resource Worker and Synod Property Officer. If people are wanting to support the disaster response through the Uniting Church, they are referred to the National Disaster Relief Fund of the Uniting Church. The Northern Regional Council of Congress will be drawing on that Fund when needed. Donations to the National Fund can be made online at http://assembly.uca.org.au/national-disaster-relief-fund.
